No frost here, still plenty of pick your own tomatoes available and farmstand vegetables

Posted 9/17/2007 8:53am by Randy Warren.

For the next few weeks the farm hours are Tues - Fri 9-6, Sat and Sun 9-4, closed Monday. The PYO tomato patch still has an abundant supply of main season red and green varieties. The price for PYO  is  $1.00/lb  red or green.  This year the patch has approx 800 tomato plants with 13 varieties including heirloom and plum varieties.  We expect to have tomatoes into Oct if we don't have a hard freeze.  We are covering our beds tonight in case we get a frost. Surprisingly the green beans are still producing and available for picking.   We have two types of Sweet Corn every day, all white Silver King and a bicolor Senaca Dancer, and we hope to have it into late Sept.  The farmstand is stocked daily with various varieties of tomatoes, cukes, various lettuces, peppers, kale, Baby Swiss chard, summer squash, traditional and eight ball Zucchini. We are picking late season plantings of cukes and zuchinni now, however the cukes are struggling resulting in a limited supply. We now offer Buttercup, Delicata and Kabocha Orange winter squash with cooking tips and recipes. Winter squash and all fresh vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals which are in short supply in instant foods.  Fall pumpkins and gourds are coloring up.  We have a small supply of Speckled Swan gourds available. We have started fall seedlings of broccoli, spinach, lettuces, swiss chard and kale and hope to have various vegetables thru fall. The fall raspberries did not overwinter in good health and we won't have them this year.  We no longer have PYO grapes.  Our handmade herbal soaps are sold at the farm stand year round.  My latest favorite is a nice dark Coffee mint with coffee grounds.  Call the farm phone @ 868-2001 anytime for updates or check here.
